The disease caused by Aerococcus has been underestimated, but mass spectrometry could be a simple method for identifying this pathogen. In this study, we report 2 cases of urinary tract infection by Aerococcus sanguinicola. A descriptive clinical-microbiological study was conducted on the presence of A. sanguinicola causing urinary tract infections.

More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. Archive.9 Additional closed Aerococcus genomes were published by Carkaci et al10 in 2016; this included A. sanguinicola CCUG 43001T, Au CCUG 36881T, and A. viridans CCUG 4311T. Recently, Au and A. sanguinicola genomes were characterized, postulating a core genome and determining the extent of genomic diversity among various clinical isolates.11 Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola can both cause urinary tract infections (Cattoir et al. 2010. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola, two frequently misidentified uropathogens, Scand J Infect Dis 42: 775‐780).

Vos, Results: A total of 20 Aerococcus spp. isolates were identified over the study period of 9 years. Of these, Aerococcus urinae was isolated in 10 (50%), Aerococcus viridans in 6 (30%), and Aerococcus spp. (not speciated) in 4 (20%). The median age was 74.3 years (12 males and 8 females).

Identification and susceptibility testing were performed with automatic Vitek 2 system (bioMerieux).

The patients were of old age and gender was almost equally distributed between men and women. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections.

Several other species in the Aerococcus genus have been identified, including the pathogenic A. sanguinicola and the less-pathogenic A. christensenii and A. urinaehominus [ 3 - 5 ]. While rarely recognized in the past, A. urinae has become more commonly isolated in bacterial cultures, as bacterial detection has improved [ 6 ].
